4. Configuring NetProxy Services
4.5. Telnet Gateway Service
The telnet gateway service allows your network users to use telnet clients to connect to computers on the Internet. The telnet gateway also provides several useful commands (which may be password protected) for remotely administering NetProxy.
The configuration
dialog for the telnet gateway service is shown below. For specific help on each
of the settings, click the Windows 'context help' icon at the top of the dialog
box in NetProxy, then select the item you wish to learn more about.

Local Port
Specifies the TCP port number that the telnet gateway service should
run on. Port 23 is the standard telnet port for TCP/IP.
Bind To
Interface
Allows you to select a specific IP interface that NetProxy should bind the
service to. Any connection attempts not received on this IP address will be
blocked by the operating system before they even reach NetProxy's firewall.
For example, if the IP address assigned to your local network card is selected,
any connections arriving via your external IP interface (the one belonging to
your dialup or ADSL connection) will be rejected by Windows.
When you connect to the telnet gateway from a remote machine, you will see a greeting similar to this:-

At this point, a number of commands are available to you:-
Help - Provides help information for the available telnet commands.
Connect - Connects to a remote computer. You must specify the name of the remote computer and, optionally, the port number to connect to.
Finger - Uses the finger protocol to display information about a specified user. The information provided by the finger command varies from site-to-site.
Quit - Closes the current telnet session.
Dialstatus - When NetProxy is used with a dialup (modem or ISDN) connection to the Internet, this command displays the current connection status. The dialstatus command is only available to users who have the Administrator privilege set.
Hangup - When NetProxy is used with a dialup (modem or ISDN) connection to the Internet, this command causes any existing dialup connection to be dropped. The hangup command is only available to users who have the Administrator privilege set.
Netstat - Displays complete information about which network computers are using which NetProxy services. The netstat command is only available to users who have the Administrator privilege set.
Listusers - Lists the IP address of each of the computers currently using the services of NetProxy, along with the number of connections in use. The listusers command is only available to users who have the Administrator privilege set.
Logfile - Lists the most recent 20 lines from the current NetProxy log file. Following this command with an optional numeric parameter (for example. "Logfile 30") causes that many lines to be displayed from the end of the current log file. The listusers command is only available to users who have the Administrator privilege set.
Version - Displays the version number of the NetProxy engine, and information about the version of Windows that NetProxy is running on.
