3.4. Installilng TCP/IP on your Network Workstations

The computers on your network must use the TCP/IP protocol to communicate with NetProxy. TCP/IP is the network protocol used by computers on the Internet. If you are using Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT, you can safely install the TCP/IP protocol alongside any existing network protocols such as NetBEUI or IPX/SPX.

The TCP/IP protocol is available for all popular operating systems including Windows, OS/2, all variants of UNIX, MacOS, BeOS, AmigaDOS and RiscOS. All of these operating systems can be configured to use NetProxy as a gateway to the Internet.

IP addresses beginning 192.168 are reserved for use on private networks and will not clash with IP addresses of valid hosts on the Internet. We therefore recommend that you use IP addresses in the range 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254 for the machines on your network.

There are two methods of assigning IP addresses to network clients. You can either instruct your network computers to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server (NetProxy will then take care of assigning appropriate IP settings to your computers), or you can configure the settings for each machine manually.

To install TCP/IP on a machine running Windows:-

To configure a machine running Windows to use DHCP to automatically obtain TCP/IP settings from NetProxy:-

When the computer reboots, assuming NetProxy is running on another machine on your network, a unique IP address and related TCP/IP setup details will be automatically assigned.

To manually configure the TCP/IP settings on a machine running Windows 95, 98 or NT:-

You may be required to restart the computer in order for the new TCP/IP settings to take effect.

Once you have configured your client software to use NetProxy, the setup is complete.
