3.3. Running NetProxy as a System Service
NetProxy consists of two separate programs. NPConfig.EXE is the 'front-end' program that allows you to configure the various settings, and NPEngine.EXE is the "proxy engine" - a program that runs invisibly and does all of the actual sever work such as caching web pages, accepting FTP requests and forwarding mapped port connects to the correct destination.
Although NPConfig and the proxy engine communicate with each other to exchange setup information and statistics, each program can be run independently.
For most setups, the most convenient way to run the NetProxy Engine is as a system service. NetProxy runs as a service under any version of Windows. Windows system services have the following properties:-
To install NetProxy as a system service, select the "System service" option from the "Options" menu in NPConfig. The next time the computer reboots, NetProxy will automatically start up as a system service.
