3. Installation

3.1. Configuring the NetProxy PC

NetProxy runs on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, or Windows NT (version 4.0 or later, including Windows 2000 and XP). However, the computers on your network that connect to the Internet via NetProxy can be running any operating system that supports TCP/IP. This includes all versions of Windows, IBM OS/2, any variety of UNIX (of course!), and Apple Macintosh computers.

The computer that is to run NetProxy must have a correctly configured TCP/IP connection to the Internet. If you currently use the computer on which you have installed NetProxy to access the Internet without problems, then you can safely assume that your connection is correctly configured.

After ensuring that the computer running NetProxy has a working connection to the Internet, you need to install the TCP/IP protocol for the network card and assign it a unique internal IP address so that NetProxy can relay information from the Internet to the other computers on your network. To do this, follow the steps in the section entitled Installing TCP/IP for the Network Interface on your NetProxy PC.

After you have installed TCP/IP on your NetProxy PC, you should configure the services you wish to provide to your network users. The simplest method of doing this is to use the NetProxy Configuration Wizard. Alternatively, detailed instructions for manually configuring individual services are provided in the section entitled Configuring NetProxy Services.

Dial-Up Connections

If your connection to the Internet uses Windows dial-up networking (DUN), as is the case with most modem or ISDN connections, then you should check the following option to ensure that NetProxy retains full control of your dial-up connection:-
